Lady Gaga Makes History With First 2021 Grammy Award Win

Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande have picked up a Grammy award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for "Rain on Me" off of Lady Gaga's album Chromatica.

This is Lady Gaga's 12th Grammy Award.

With the win, "Rain on Me" becomes the first all-female song to win Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the Grammys. The category is new, first given out in 2012, when the Grammys combined Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals, Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals and Best Pop Instrumental Performance into one category.

It was a big year for queer women being nominated. Not only did Gaga get two nominations, but Brittany Howard, the lead singer of Alabama Shakes, scored five nominations this year, Phoebe Bridgers got four nominations, Brandy Clark got two, and Brandi Carlile also got two. Lesbian rapper Chika was also nominated for Best New Artist. Howard and Carlile have each picked up one award so far tonight.

"Rain on Me" was up against songs by J Balvin, Dua Lipa, Bad Bunny & Tainy, Justin Bieber featuring Quavo, BTS, and Taylor Swift featuring Bon Iver. Gaga is also nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album.

Gaga did not give a speech but tweeted that she would be watching the awards.

Gaga is currently in Italy, filming House of Gucci, where she plays Patrizia Reggiani, the ex-wife of Maurizio Gucci who was charged with his assassination in 1995. She stars in the film opposite Adam Driver. Ridley Scott is directing a script by Robert Bentivegna. It also stars Al Pacino, Jared Leto, and Jeremy Irons, and is expected to premiere in theaters November 24, 2021.
