One of the all-time greats of American Music is going to be memorialized at this year's Grammy Awards.
Stephen Sondheim, the eight-time Grammy-winning composer and lyricist behind musicals including West Side Story, Company, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods, and Sunday in the Park with George, is set to be honored at the 2022 Grammy Awards following his death on November 26 at age 91.
Dear Evan Hansen star Ben Platt, Genius: Aretha's Cynthia Erivo, Hamilton's Leslie Odom, Jr., and West Side Story's Rachel Zegler are set to perform songs by the legendary composer. Which songs they'll perform haven't been released yet, but it is said the tribute will be a part of the show's "In Memoriam" segment.
"Thank you @recordingacademy for letting me honor my hero of heroes, Stephen Sondheim with Cynthia Erivo, Leslie Odom, Jr, and Rachel Zegler," Platt wrote on his Instagram.
"Honored to perform at the Grammy Awards," Erivo added in her own post. "Paying tribute to the one and only Mr. Sondheim."
During his storied career, Sondheim won eight Tony Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Tony in 2008. He's also won a Pulitzer, an Oscar, a Laurence Olivia Award, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Many of his musicals have been adapted into films, including West Side Story (which was again adapted last year), Gypsy, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Sweeney Todd, and Into the Woods. He also wrote songs for Warren Beatty's films Reds and Dick Tracy.
Sondheim died of cardiovascular disease at his home in late November last year in the arms of his husband Jeffrey Romley.
Other performers at this year's ceremony will include Brandi Carlile, Lil Nas X, the Brothers Osborne, H.E.R., Jon Batiste, BTS, Billie Eilish, and Olivia Rodrigo.
The Grammys are taking place on April 3 on CBS at 8pm ET/5pm PT. The ceremony will also be available to stream live and on-demand on Paramount Plus.
