Attention all queers with mommy issues, actress Trace Lysette is here with a new song "SMB" and music video and she is feeeeeeding us!
"I'm a Self Made Bitch, on some real ass shit, went and start from scratch, yeah that's what I did," Lysette raps over a beat by Tero Golden and Big Rula. It's hot, it's badass, and Lysette shows off multiple flows and a real talent for lyrics in the song. The track, which debuts today, is her first as a musician.
Lysette told Out that she has been wanting to get into music for years, but that got put on the back burner when her acting career took off. "I used to write some poetry and hit the poetry slams in NYC which led to rapping," she told me. "I have stuff written from like over 10 years ago that I just never recorded because I couldn't find the connects or maybe I just wasn't ready."
But now she is ready, and when an opportunity to make music appeared, she made sure to grab it. "This one came about through a movie that's coming out called Venus as a Boy. The writer/director Ty Hodges asked me to do a track for it and I said sure. It was like the universe knocking on my door asking me 'Trace, what's good?'"
Her answer is a blisteringly hot track with lines like "cater to my box but don't put me in one... they call me mutha for a reason, now bitch you my son, son," and "you came up in here hungry thinking mutha gonna feed ya, but if you came with empty hands then I'mma say 'see ya'" in between brags about being "Hollywood glam with a side of banjee cunt." It's an ass bumping song, I want to grind up on my girlfriend in a dark, sweaty gay club.
"It's definitely a nod to my trans sisters," Lysette says. "Being self made in terms of career, but also my womanhood, because that shit was not handed to me, it was a battle." Amen to that.
Fans are absolutely loving the track, and Lysette feels the love. "It feels so damn good, you know? The love has been nonstop today," she says. "I think people know 'Trace the Actress' and not actually Trace, so music is even more vulnerable to me in that way. It feels good though. The love is real."
But Mutha Trace wasn't content just giving us the track, she also filmed a music video for the song. In the video, we see Trace dancing outdoors in a tight bodysuit and on an LA city sidewalk in short short shorts and a crop top that reads "Femme Queen" -- this is ballroom's term for trans women and Lysette is an icon in the scene. But the real highlight is when she starts serving MILF realness in a sheer pink robe with feather accents over a bikini while she lounges around her house with a glass of champagne and a fruit by the foot. Later she brings out a baby bottle as she raps about being a mother.
A lot of rappers talk about other rappers being their sons, but here Lysette takes being a mother to new heights: She's not just a mother, she's a Mommy and she's gonna take good care of you as long as you're good to her. Shout out to Queen Latifah.
This is just the beginning for Lysette, who says she currently has "a couple other songs I'm tossing around in my head," and also has an idea for collaborations with Mila Jam and RuPaul's Drag Race alum Kylie Sonique. "I wouldn't rule out a remix for 'SMB' too," she tells me, "We'll see."
