Here’s What We Know About the Barbie Movie So Far

Come on Barbie, let's go party!

Many of us remember playing with Barbie dolls when we were a kid, and depending on who you grew up to be, maybe you were pairing your Barbies together, only playing with Kens, or focused on dressing your dolls up in the most stylish outfits. But no matter how you played with them, we can all come together when Barbie makes her big-screen, live-action debut.

There's long been talk in Hollywood about bringing the iconic doll to life, but only recently have things started to come together. After years of nixed versions of the film involving Diablo Cody, Amy Schumer, and Anne Hathaway, we finally have our Barbie stars and filmmakers.

Warner Bros.' live-action Barbie film is starring Margot Robbie as the beautiful blonde doll, and Ryan Gosling as her boyfriend Ken. The film is being directed by Little Women's Greta Gerwig, who wrote the film with her partner, Noah Baumbach.

Alongside Robbie as Barbie, we know that two queer actresses will be joining her. The movie also stars Superstore's America Ferrera, Shang-Chi's Simu Liu, Ariana Greenblatt, and two of our favorite queer actors, Kate McKinnon and Alexandra Shipp.

It's unknown what roles McKinnon and Shipp will play (or what roles anyone other than Robbie and Gosling will play), but hopefully at least one of them will play that Barbie doll who always got married to your other Barbies and wore too much plaid.

Shipp is the latest actor to join the cast, and can most recently be seen starring in the musical tick, tick... Boom! alongside Andrew Garfield. In that movie, she plays Jonathan's neglected girlfriend Susan and delivers the best performance of her young career.

Shipp, who also appeared in Love, Simon, came out last Pride Month. "Today I'm happy in ways I don't think my kid self could imagine," she wrote. "I get to be exactly who I want to be EVERY F*CKING DAY and it feels incredible!!"

You can catch Shipp, McKinnon, and all the other dolls when Barbie eventually comes out.
