While other awards can seem stiff and stuffy, GALECA: The Society of LGBTQ+ Entertainment Critics' Dorian Awards always add a little spice to the season. And now, we know who this year's nominees are.
Jane Campion's western The Power of the Dog leads all films with nine nominations, including for Best Film, Best LGBTQ+ Film, and acting nominations for Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, and Kodi Smit-McPhee. Campion was also nominated for Best Director.
Other leading nomination-getters include the racial drama Passing, animated refugee documentary Flee, and Steven Spielberg's West Side Story, which each got five nominations. International features Drive My Car and The Worst Person in the World got four nominations each, as did the musical tick, tick... BOOM!.
The Dorian Awards are notable for having categories that other awards don't have, such as Best LGBTQ+ Film, Best Unsung Film, Campiest Flick, "We're Wilde About You!" Rising Star Award, and the Wilde Artist award, which goes to a "truly groundbreaking force in film, theatre, and/or television."
This year's Best LGBTQ+ Film nominees include The Power of the Dog, Flee, as well as Pedro Almodovar's Parallel Mothers, lesbian nun film Benedetta, and Shiva Baby, which is also nominated for Best Unsung Film. Campiest Flick is between the musical Annette, Disney villain origin story Cruella, Old (about a beach that makes you old), Lady Gaga's over the top House of Gucci, and surprisingly terrific horror gem Malignant.
Several out actors were nominated for acting awards, including Kristen Stewart for Spencer and Tessa Thompson for Passing in the gender-neutral Best Film Performance category. Ariana DeBose (West Side Story), Robin de Jesus (tick, tick... BOOM!), and Colman Domingo (Zola) all were nominated in the Best Supporting Film Performance category. DeBose is also nominated in the Rising Star category along with Alana Haim (Licorice Pizza), Patti Harrison (Together, Together), Jasmin Savoy Brown (Scream), and Rachel Zegler (West Side Story).
The Wilde Artist category is filled this year by directors Pedro Almodovar, Jane Campion, and Lin-Manuel Miranda, as well as rapper Lil Nas X, and legendary actress Jennifer Coolidge.
"You could say the movies and performances chosen by our Society's members are a reflection of what appeals to the entire trendsetting Queer and Trans community," GALECA President Monika Estrella Negra said in a statement. "As our representation grows in the industry and beyond, expect the Dorian Awards to continue to shine light on the importance, and excitement, of having diverse critical eyes on cinema. There is much work to be done in advancing a variety of voices and images that often go unheard and unseen."
The winners will be announced on March 17.
