Excuse me, that's Oscar-nominated actress Ariana DeBose.
Steven Spielberg's remake of West Side Story is coming to Disney Plus and HBO Max next month. It was announced today that the film, which was nominated for seven Academy Awards yesterday, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actress for Ariana DeBose, will be available to watch on the two streamers starting March 2, 2022.
For international audiences, West Side Story will premiere on Disney Plus on March 2 for most but will come to Taiwan on March 9 and Japan on March 30. The one-hour special Something's Coming: West Side Story - A Special Edition of 20/20 is also currently streaming on Disney Plus.
Out100 cover star Ariana DeBose made history yesterday when she became the first out queer Afro-Latina to be nominated for an acting Oscar for her role as Anita in West Side Story. She's also just the fourth out actress to be nominated for an acting Oscar, after Angelina Jolie (Changeling), Lady Gaga (A Star is Born), and Kristen Stewart (Spencer).
DeBose won the Golden Globe earliet this season for her role and is looking like one of the favorites to win the Oscar. If she does, she'll follow in Rita Moreno's footsteps - that iconic actress won the Oscar for playing Anita in the 1961 film version of West Side Story.
West Side Story was directed by Steven Spielberg, with a screenplay by Angels in America writer Tony Kushner. It also stars Ansel Elgort, Rachel Zegler, David Alvarez, and Mike Faist.
DeBose's upcoming projects include the sci-fi thriller I.S.S., which follows a group of astronauts living on the International Space Station whose mission and lives are thrown into danger when they receive an ominous message from Earth. She's also set to appear in Matthew Vaughn's upcoming spy film Argylle, also starring Henry Cavill, Sam Rockwell, Bryce Dallas Howard, Catherine O'Hara, John Cena, Samuel L. Jackson, Bryan Cranston, and Dua Lipa.
