NEON, one of the industry leaders in boundary-pushing horror, has announced their next project, and it stars one of our trans faves!
Euphoria star Hunter Schafer is starring alongside Academy Award nominee John Malkovich, Gemma Chan, and Sofia Boutella in the upcoming horror film Cuckoo, written and directed by Tilman Singer.
We don't know any plot details, but Cuckoo is the follow-up to Singer's 2018 supernatural horror film Luz, which followed a taxi driver being questioned by police after a mysterious accident. What starts as a regular interview soon turns deadly as the doctor conducting it becomes possessed by an ancient demon. The film won a Special Jury Prize for Best Horror Film at Fantastic Fest and Best Film at the Milan Film Festival.
Singer is bringing back most of the team from Luz for this film, including the cinematographer, composer, and production designer. Principal photography on the film will begin April of next year.
Cuckoo will be Schafer's first film role after starring in HBO's Euphoria for the past two years as Jules Vaughn, a troubled trans teen. The role is considered groundbreaking by many, and Schafer has quickly become a huge Gen Z star.
This year, she starred in and helped to write and produce a special episode of Euphoria focused around her character. It followed "Jules over the Christmas holiday as she reflects on the year." Schafer said that she had a great time working on the special.
"I helped write the final script and was there for preproduction and helped to plan out the shots and storyboard it," she told Net-a-Porter. "All that influenced the performance because I knew the script on this whole other level."
