'Disclosure,' 'Euphoria,' 'Welcome to Chechnya' Among Peabody Nominees

Disclosure is finally getting some much-deserved awards recognition.

After a shocking snub by the Academy Awards, Disclosure, the Netflix documentary about trans representation in Hollywood, is getting much deserved recognition with a Peabody Award nomination alongside other LGBTQ+ focused media like Welcome to Chechnya, Euphoria, and Disney Channel cartoon The Owl House.

The Peabody Awards honor "excellence in storytelling that reflects the social issues and the emerging voices of our day," according to its website. Annually, 30 stories from across journalism, television, podcast/radio, and digital media are selected by a Board of Jurors to receive the award. The 30 winners will be selected from this group of 60 nominees.

One of the best documentaries on Hollywood ever, Disclosure goes back to the very first days of filmmaking to track how transgender people have been represented, both as characters and actors, in film. It features commentary from people like Laverne Cox, Jen Richards, Mj Rodriguez, and Trace Lysette. The film was a massive snub earlier this year when the Academy Awards announced the documentaries shortlisted for the award and left Disclosure off the list.

The film's impact can already be seen in Hollywood. Halle Berry stepped away from a role as a trans man after being contacted by the Disclosure team, Ryan Reynolds launched a diversity program to get more marginalized people jobs in Hollywood after watching, and even Oprah cited the documentary when preparing for her recent interview with Elliot Page.

Disclosure isn't the only queer-focused documentary to get recognized. Welcome to Chechnya, which was nominated for an Oscar, focuses on a group of activists risking their lives fighting for LGBTQ+ rights in the country where a purge on LGBTQ+ citizens has been taking place.

The special Zendaya-centered episode of Euphoria is also nominated. After season two of the hit HBO drama was delayed because of quarantine, creator Sam Levinson decided to create two special episodes that serve as a bridge between the seasons; one about Zendaya's character Rue, and one about Hunter Schafer's character Jules.

In the Children's and Youth category, The Owl House is nominated. Created by Dana Terrace, who is herself bisexual, The Owl House is the first Disney show to feature an LGBTQ+ protagonist. It follows Luz Noceda, a bisexual Dominican-American girl who ends up joining a school for witches. She soon develops a crush on one of her fellow students, a witch girl named Amity.

The winners of the Peabody Awards will be announced in June during a virtual celebration. The date and time of that celebration will be announced later.
