We've been tentatively excited as hell for the new Blumhouse produced The Craft movie ever since it was announced a couple years ago, and we got even more excited when they announced that they were casting trans actress Zoey Luna (Pose) to play one of the four coven members. Now Manon has heard our prayers and delivered us the first trailer!
The trailer starts with Hannah (Cailee Spaeny, Bad Times at the El Royal) and her mom (Michelle Monaghan) moving in with her new dad (David Duchovny). But a new family life is just the tip of the iceberg for Hannah. After she gets her period in class and starts bleeding onto the floor, she's quickly approached by three girls (Lovie Simone, Gideon Adlon, Zoey Luna) who invite her over after school.
After a, frankly, very queer, initiation ritual involving a bath, flowers, and pentagrams, the girls excitedly tell Hannah that they invited her over because she's the fourth member of their coven. "Half the battle of having powers is believing you do," the girls tell her, "That's why covens have always been important."
As the trailer continues, we also see that covens can be dangerous, and potentially even deadly. As Hannah and the others' powers grow, they start to get in over their heads. In the original, the coven turned in on itself, will the same thing happen here?
The Craft is a classic for all teenage weirdos, especially girls and queers who feel powerless in a world that's largely against them. The Craft: Legacy looks to bring the same to current teens, while paying respect to the original. We even get a call back to the classic "We are the weirdos, mister," line from the original. And these witches pull it off!
Of course, it wouldn't be a modern horror trailer without a slow and creepy version of a classic upbeat song, this time "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun." There are ouija boards, there's light as a feather stiff as a board, and sleepovers, even a photo of Fairuza Balk's Nancy Downs from the first movie! All the hallmarks of a great Craft sequel. But this time it's coming from a modern viewpoint.
Not only is the film written and directed by Zoe Lister-Jones (Band Aid), but the coven is more diverse this time around, with Lovie Simone and trans Latina actress Zoey Luna starring. So often in both movies and real life, witchcraft is portrayed as something only cis women can do, something that's tied to menstruation, so adding a trans witch to the coven is a great step away from that kind of TERFy rhetoric.
Originally slated for theatrical release, Blumhouse and Red Wagon Entertainment have decided that because of ongoing global pandemic, The Craft: Legacy will premiere on all PVOD platforms and be available for purchase on October 28 just in time for a spooky and witchy halloween.
