Who knew the greenhouse was such a major cruising ground back in the day!
In this exclusive new clip from Vita & Virginia -- an upcoming IFC Films production that explores the intense, passionate relationship shared by writers Vita Sackville-West (Olivier Award-nominated actress Gemma Arterton) and Virginia Woolf (Widows star and tall girl legend Elizabeth Debicki) -- the titular women find themselves alone in a greenhouse. Where's Woolf's husband? Off reading Mrs. Dalloway. Where's Sackville-West's? Who fucking cares!
"When I read your work, I don't know whether to be dejected or encouraged," Vita tells Virginia. "Dejected because I shall never be able to write like that or encouraged because somebody else can."
"Do keep it up," Virginia responds, "your belief that I achieve things."
"I am bewitched by your writing, Vita says back."
Yes. Her ... writing.
"It makes me afraid of you," Sackville-West continues.
"It's all rhythm," Woolf tells her, turning around and moving closer until her hand is hovering over Sackville-West's heart. "Once you get that, you can't use the wrong words. Sight and emotion create a wave in the mind long before you have the words to describe it. When writing --"
Remember. They're talking about writing.
"-- that's what you must recapture: that wave as it breaks and tumbles in the mind. If you listen, you'll make the words fit."
Well, okay! Surprised those plants didn't die of underwatering, given how thirsty that greenhouse was for a second there.
Written and directed by Chanya Button, Vita & Virginia will arrive in select theaters on Aug. 23 and will hit VOD on Aug. 30.
