Yes, Lady Gaga Wore 6 Masks, Won 5 Trophies at 2020 VMAs
Even though MTV's VMA Awards were different than in years past, they certainly still gave you a show. Chloe X Halle set the bar high with a standout pre-show performance (honestly those girls have been keeping the quarantine performance bar high!) but the one and only Lady Gaga kept it that way. She turned the awards stage into a proverbial runway with the help of her longtime collaborator and stylist Nicola Formichetti. The best part? She also used the looks as a PSA. The message was clear: wear a freaking mask!
"I might sound like a broken record but wear a mask," she said at one point. "It's a sign of respect."
Gaga picked up five awards last night. She won artist of the year, the first-ever Tricon Award, as well as song of the year, best collaboration, and best cinematography with "Rain on Me." She performed "Rain On Me" at the show alongside Ariana Grande, who also appeared wearing a mask (and made a point to adjust it mid-performance.) Gaga's performance mask was created by Manhattan-based designer Diego Montoya who has become known for his ornate designs he creates for RuPaul's Drag Race alum. Montoya collaborated with Smooth Technology for the sound-reactive mask.
The night brought Gaga's total for VMA Moonpeople up to 15. This put her third as the most awarded performer in the history of the award show beat only by Beyonce and Madonna who have 25 and 20 respectively.
