Lady Gaga is on her press tour for House of Gucci, and she is not holding back! In a new interview with W Magazine, Gaga revealed what it was like on the last day of filming, and what it was like to leave her character behind.
In the film, Gaga plays Patrizia Reggiani, the former wife of Maurizio Gucci who was convicted of hiring a hitman to kill him. Reggiani, especially the way Gaga portrays her, is a larger-than-life character with an accent that sounds like a commercial for spaghetti and 54 different hairstyles. Gaga completely immersed herself in the character, so how did she know when it was time to let go and become herself again?
"On the last day of filming I was on the balcony of my apartment in Rome and I was blasting Dean Martin singing 'Mambo Italiano' and I had a cigarette hanging out of my mouth. I was Patrizia," she said. "But I knew I had to say goodbye to her: Large swarms of flies kept following me around, and I truly began to believe that she had sent them. I was ready to let her go."
If that's not a clear message from the Italian Black Widow, I don't know what is!
Gaga is right in the middle of doing press in the hopes that she can get a second Academy Award nomination for her acting. She was previously nominated for her leading role in A Star Is Born, for which she won the Oscar for Best Original Song. She's already been nominated for a Golden Globe and the SAG Award for her role in House of Gucci this year, and she looks like she should be a lock to get a second acting nomination.
She's one of several queer actresses leading the Oscar race this season. Kristen Stewart is also a frontrunner for her performance as Princess Diana in Spencer, and Tessa Thompson is getting Oscar buzz for her role in Passing. Ariana DeBose is a new frontrunner in the Best Supporting Actress category after winning the Golden Globe for playing Anita in West Side Story.
The Oscar nominations are announced on February 8, so we'll have to wait until then to see if the flies made any difference.
