Comedian Eddie Izzard went on Portrait Artist of the Year and revealed that from now on, she's only going to use she/her pronouns and wants to be "based in girl mode from now on."
Sky Arts TV's Portrait Artist of the Year is a reality competition show where contestants draw and paint celebrities, and Izzard was appearing in the finale. In the episode, she was only referred to using she/her pronouns and was asked why she chose to appear on the show.
"I try to do things that I think are interesting," she answered. Then she added that the show is an opportunity for her to try out using new pronouns. "This is the first program I've asked if I can be 'she' and 'her.' This is a little transition period," she said.
The host then asked Izzard how it feels to be able to use the new pronouns. "Well, it feels great because people assume that ... they just know me from before, but I'm gender fluid. I just want to be based in girl mode from now on," she answered.
Izzard has long been known for her fashion and femme style. One of her long time famous jokes has her talking about wearing dresses and other femme clothes saying "they're not women's clothes. They're my clothes, I bought them."
In 2017 she talked about being trans in her memoir, Believe Me: A Memoir of Love, Death and Jazz Chicken, as well as in a Hollywood Reporter interview about the book.
"If you are coming out as transgender or gay or lesbian, it's such a tough rite of passage and quest," she told THR about why she's been open about her gender. "It assaults your senses because, back in '85, everyone said, 'No, no, hide about it.' I just thought they were all wrong."
